SD is a severe disease affecting the colon (large intestine) of pigs causing diarrhoea, frequently mixed with mucus and blood, which can lead to death.

Background
  • The disease can severely affect production by depressing growth rate and feed conversion efficiency (FCE) by 20-30%.
  • It can affect non-immune pigs of all ages but is most frequently seen in growers and finishing pigs.
  • Recent surveys suggest a SD prevalence of 10 - 33% of the herds worldwide
  • SD can cause mortality, culling, holdbacks and weight/sort loss
  • SD reduces feed conversion, average daily gain and growth efficiency

SD causes major economic losses
