Eradication of Swine Dysentery (SD)
SD Eradication programme

ECONOR was used on a 90 sow breeder/weaner producing farm in Denmark to successfully eradicate Swine Dysentery. Tiamulin had previously been used at high levels to control the disease.

ECONOR premix was given in-feed to provide 5mg valnemulin/kg body weight for 14 days, then reduced to 2.5 mg/kg for a further 14 days and finally to 1.25 mg/kg for 21 days. This was coupled with partial depopulation and extensive cleaning and disinfection of the farm.

Results: There were substantial improvements in performance and reduction in medication costs by 80%.

Once Swine Dysentery has been introduced on a farm, it has traditionally been considered extremely difficult to eradicate, with long-term medication being the accepted response. ECONOR, used in a comprehensive programme under strict veterinary supervision can eradicate SD.
