SD is a severe disease affecting the colon (large intestine) of pigs causing diarrhoea, frequently mixed with mucus and blood, which can lead to death.
The disease can severely affect production by depressing growth rate and feed conversion efficiency (FCE) by 20-30%.
It can affect non-immune pigs of all ages but is most frequently seen in growers and finishing pigs.
Recent surveys suggest a SD prevalence of 10 - 33% of the herds worldwide
SD can cause mortality, culling, holdbacks and weight/sort loss
SD reduces feed conversion, average daily gain and growth efficiency
SD causes major economic losses
